Pred kúpou psa treba všetko starostlivo premyslieť v rodinnom kruhu. Odhadnúť časové, priestorové i finančné možnosti. Predovšetkým je potrebné, aby mali na príchod psa rovnaký kladný názor obaja manželia. Potom sa treba rozhodnúť pre plemeno.

Psíka alebo sučku

Niekedy sú pri výcviku náročnejšie, no v pracovnom využití možno od nich žiadať viac než od sučiek. Nie je to však pravidlo. Nevýhodou býva, že keď zacítia pach sučky v ruji, odmietajú poslušnosť majiteľovi a radšej poslúchnu hlas prírody. Pohlavne vydráždený pes má často snahu utiecť za sučkou i z domu. Ak sa mu to viackrát podarí, môže sa z neho stať tulák.
