Pred kúpou psa treba všetko starostlivo premyslieť v rodinnom kruhu. Odhadnúť časové, priestorové i finančné možnosti. Predovšetkým je potrebné, aby mali na príchod psa rovnaký kladný názor obaja manželia. Potom sa treba rozhodnúť pre plemeno.

Sučka v byte nie je vystavená "dvoreniu" psov a keď s ňou ideme na vychádzku, zastriekame jej zadok a labky sprayom Labiodor, ktorý odpudzuje záujem psov 2 - 4 hodiny. Sučky chované v koterci treba chrániť asi 21 dní. Pri vychádzkach používame tiež tento spray.
Psy, najmä služobné a pracovné, bývajú statnejšie a vytrvalejšie. Bývajú aj odolnejšie voči nepriaznivému počasiu. Niekedy sú pri výcviku náročnejšie, no v pracovnom využití možno od nich žiadať viac než od sučiek. Nie je to však pravidlo. Nevýhodou býva, že keď zacítia pach sučky v ruji, odmietajú poslušnosť majiteľovi a radšej poslúchnu hlas prírody. Pohlavne vydráždený pes má často snahu utiecť za sučkou i z domu. Ak sa mu to viackrát podarí, môže sa z neho stať tulák.
