Pred kúpou psa treba všetko starostlivo premyslieť v rodinnom kruhu. Odhadnúť časové, priestorové i finančné možnosti. Predovšetkým je potrebné, aby mali na príchod psa rovnaký kladný názor obaja manželia. Potom sa treba rozhodnúť pre plemeno.
Plemien psov je veľa, a tak má každý možnosť vybrať si podľa vkusu, chovateľských možností a potrieb. Medzi učenlivosťou a inteligenciou jednotlivých plemien psov vo všeobecnosti nie sú veľké rozdiely; iná vec je však už otázka ich využiteľnosti. Kto sa chce venovať športovému výcviku psov služobných plemien, môže si vybrať z množstva plemien uznávaných za služobné. Paleta plemien poľovníckych psov je veľmi široká, takže nijaký poľovník si nemôže sťažovať na malý výber. Na stráženie si vyberáme z plemien pracovných psov, na dostihy z plemien chrtov. Veľká je aj paleta plemien spoločenských psov. Práve z tejto skupiny si ľahko môžu vybrať vhodné malé plemená tí, ktorí chcú držať psa v mestskom byte.
Psíka alebo sučku
Toto je azda najčastejšia otázka, akú si nastávajúci majitelia psa dávajú. Väčšinou sa rozhodnú pre psa, z obavy pred komplikáciami, ktoré z chovu sučky a z jej dvakrát za rok sa opakujúcej ruje vznikajú. Je však dosť ľudí, ktorí dávajú prednosť sučkám, aj keď nechcú odchovávať šteňatá.
Sučky majú väčšinou miernejšiu povahu a bývajú poslušnejšie a ovládateľnejšie. Pri držaní v byte majú tú výhodu, že keď ich ráno vyvedú von, vyprázdnia sa spontánne a zakrátko sa môžu vrátiť do bytu. Pes však potrebuje obísť celý "svoj revír", aby na príhodných miestach zanechal značku niekoľkými kvapkami moču. Máloktorý sa vymočí spontánne, takže ich ranné vyprázdňovanie trvá dlhšie.
S rujou sučiek nie sú až také problém, ako sa mnohí nazdávajú. Sučka v byte nie je vystavená "dvoreniu" psov a keď s ňou ideme na vychádzku, zastriekame jej zadok a labky sprayom Labiodor, ktorý odpudzuje záujem psov 2 - 4 hodiny. Sučky chované v koterci treba chrániť asi 21 dní. Pri vychádzkach používame tiež tento spray.
Psy, najmä služobné a pracovné, bývajú statnejšie a vytrvalejšie. Bývajú aj odolnejšie voči nepriaznivému počasiu. Niekedy sú pri výcviku náročnejšie, no v pracovnom využití možno od nich žiadať viac než od sučiek. Nie je to však pravidlo. Nevýhodou býva, že keď zacítia pach sučky v ruji, odmietajú poslušnosť majiteľovi a radšej poslúchnu hlas prírody. Pohlavne vydráždený pes má často snahu utiecť za sučkou i z domu. Ak sa mu to viackrát podarí, môže sa z neho stať tulák.
